How To Live On Less Than $12,000

I dislike paying taxes as much as the next guy. But instead of complaining I’ve put my money in investments that give me tax breaks like real estate and oil drilling programs.
However, some people hate paying so much that they’re willing to live below the poverty level just to avoid “qualifying” for taxes. Here’s a war protester that refuses to pay for the Iraq war and has decided to live on less than $12,000 a year.
Since I pay nearly $15,000 to just rent a 2 bedroom condo I definitely can’t see myself living on that amount. So while I don’t recommend taking a pay-cut just to avoid taxes, there are some good pointers on how to save money. After all, a penny saved is a penny earned!
- Get rid of cable TV
- Unplug electrical items that aren’t in use, especially TVs and VCRs that use electricity even when off
- Drive less by consolidating your trips
- By generic brands
- Eat at home and learn how to cook
- Try to save on heating/cooling costs
- Learn how to repair broken stuff
- Quit smoking and brew your own alcohol
- Get a pet instead of a kid
Ok, the last one is a bit kooky but having kids is expensive. In my area, just day care runs about $1000/month.
But saving money and investing it is the surest way to end up wealthy.
